Undersea Dragon Arrived

Posted in General, Politics by MZaidee

Malaysia’s first submarine “KD Tunku Abdul Rahman”, arrived at the Pulau Indah Royal Malaysian Navy base, Port Klang on September 3, 2009 and was received by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia) Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin.

KD Tunku Abdul Rahman sailed from Toulon, France on July 11 and took 54 days to reach Malaysia, making stops at Jeddah, Djibouti and Cochin on the 6,000Nm journey, which included 32 days of submersion and 10 days of surfacing.

The submarine was jointly developed by the French company DCNS, and the Spanish company Navantia and is one of two Scorpene submarines acquired by the Malaysian government to strengthen the Royal Malaysian Navy.

With a maximum depth of 350 meters (1,148 feet), the Scorpene is able to achieve an average of 240 days at sea. The structure of the submarine uses high-yield stress-specific steel which allows for as many dives to maximum depth as necessary. Also the Scorpene allows for a greater load of fuel and ammunition thanks to the use of high-tensile steel that reduce the weight of the hull. The planning and design of the Scorpene was directed towards achieving an extremely quiet vessel with a great detection capability and offensive power. By using advanced hydrodynamics with an albacore bow shape the Scorpene has low radiated noise reducing risk of detection from enemy sensors. The equipment is mounted on elastic mountings and the noisiest systems have double elastic mounting. This greatly reduces the risk of noise profiles to be radiated outside the submarine.

Able to carry out anti-submarine or anti-surface ship warfare operations, as well as special forces deployment in coastal waters, the Scorpene is manned by a 31 man crew. The control room and the living quarters are mounted on an elastically supported and acoustically isolated floating platform. All living and operational areas are air-conditioned. The vessel is equipped with all the necessary systems to provide vital supplies, water, provisions, regeneration of the atmosphere, to ensure the survival of all the crew for seven days.

Obama: “Stop the Settlements”

Posted in Politics by MZaidee

Support ObamaPresident Obama just made a remarkable speech in Egypt, committing personally to building peace in the Middle East. Unexpectedly, his first move is to challenge American ally Israel directly - pressing its right-wing government to stop their self-destructive policy of settlements, which are illegal colonies set up on territory recognized by the US and the world as Palestinian.

This is a moment of rare crisis and opportunity. Obama’s bold strategy is facing powerful opposition, so he’s going to need help around the world in the coming days and weeks to strengthen his resolve. Let’s start right now - by raising a massive global chorus behind Obama’s statement that the settlements in occupied territory must stop.

There is broad agreement that the settlements are a significant barrier to peace, a view also shared by a silent majority of the Israeli public. Combined with a network of roadblocks and barriers, these colonies now blanket the West Bank, seizing territory and forcing Palestinians to live effectively as prisoners in smaller and smaller pockets.

Until this problem is tackled, it seems impossible to build a viable Palestinian state or any kind of lasting peace. For Arab states deciding what more they themselves can do for peace, stopping the settlements has become a crucial test of Israel’s seriousness.

If we can help Obama to stay the course on settlements, shift Israeli policy and encourage the Palestinians and key Arab states also to stretch out their hands, a new beginning for the Middle East is possible.

You and me can make a different, let’s vote for peace!

India Keen to Sell Small Nuclear Reactors to Malaysia

Posted in General, Politics by MZaidee

India has expressed interest in selling small nuclear reactors to Malaysia and other developing countries, if the governments are keen to use it to generate power.

At present, India is the only country in the world that produces the 220-megawatt (MWe) pressurised-heavy-water reactor after Canada, a key producer abandoned the project as production was no longer economical.

“We are willing to sell to friendly nations like Malaysia, if there is a genuine interest, as nuclear power production is a long term commitment,” Sudhinder Thakur, executive director (corporate planning) of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), said.

After India conducted a nuclear test in 1974, the Nuclear Suppliers Group barred it from trading in nuclear technology. But when India signed a controversial nuclear deal with the United States last October, the sanction was lifted.

“From a technical point of view, we can sell these reactors,” said Thakur, adding that India was ready to promote the indigenous reactor to countries, which had adequate regulatory laws and expertise to operate it.

“The ultimate objective is to produce electricity as cheaply, using coal.It is commercially viable with these reactors. It is also 30 to 40 percent cheaper compared to coal,” he said.

At present 17 reactors, ranging from 160 MWe to 540 MWe, are in operation across India, generating 4,120 MWe.

Three other plants under construction are expected to be commissioned by this year and India aims to produce 25 percent of its electricity from nuclear power by 2050.

The government-owned NPCIL is the sole body responsible for constructing and operating India’s commercial nuclear power plants.

India, the third largest economy in Asia, launched its nuclear programme as part of an energy self-sufficiency strategy and to meet the growing demand from its robust industrial sector.

Congratulation Americans, Congratulation Obama

Posted in Politics by MZaidee

Barack ObamaBarrack Obama wins. The US wakes up tomorrow to a new “first black” President.

But will it change anything for the rest of the world? Will he be able to turn around the US economy? Will he close down Guantanamo Bay? Will he stop America’s holy War against terrors? Will he solve the Palestine and Iraq conflicts?

Will he change these? I have my doubts.

But who cares, huh? They say anyone after Bush should make a better US President, at least to the rest of the miserable world.

BTW, Obama is mixed; dad’s a black from Kenya, mom a white from Kansas. So why is he the first BLACK president of the USA?
